Wang Zhaoyuan (1763–1851; her year of death is also left unspecified), a Qing-dynasty woman scholar, poet, and calligrapher. Her courtesy names were Ruiyu (瑞玉) and 畹佺; 婉佺 is also found as a variant. 端玉 and 王圓照 occur as other names. She was from Fushan, Shandong.

Life

She was the wife of Hao Yixing (1755–1823). She had a daughter, 郝文則, and a son, 郝文虎. She often prepared the inscriptions and title notes for books written by Hao Yixing. She wrote a preface for books by Chen Ershi; prefaces for her books were written by Hao Yixing, Hong Yixuan, Zang Yong, and Ma Ruichen. A conferral of honor (封贈) is also associated with her.

Scholarship and works

Wang Zhaoyuan was accomplished in poetry and prose; her learning encompassed Han Learning and the Classics, and she excelled in classical prose. Her calligraphy followed the Ou and Liu styles.

Her works include 《列女傳補注》 (eight juan), 《列仙傳校正》 (two juan), 《夢書》 (one juan), and 《婉佺詩草》; she compiled 《夢書》. Other titles associated with her include 《曬書堂閨中文存》, 《列女傳校正》 (one juan), 《待問》 (two juan), 《懿行見易類》, 《敍讚》 (one juan), 《詩問》 (Wang Zhaoyuan, seven juan), 《詩說》 (Wang Zhaoyuan, two juan), 《和鳴集》 (Wang Zhaoyuan, one juan), and 《女校》.
