Wu Yong (also written Wu Yong, with 詠 as the final character), a Song-dynasty official and thinker. His courtesy name was Shuyong, and his sobriquet was Helin; his ancestral place is given as either Wucheng or Tongchuan.
Life
Wucheng was both his ancestral place and a place to which he moved; Zhongjiang was an earlier residence. In the first year of the Jiading reign of Emperor Ningzong (1208), he passed the jinshi examination and later held the posts of Qiju Sheren and acting Vice Minister of Personnel concurrently serving in the Academy.
Memorials and official career
After a fire, Wu Yong submitted a memorial in notably earnest terms; he also memorialized on methods for appointing officials, as well as prudent government, proper public standards, ministerial integrity, and military affairs. Later, as a Ba zhang ge Xueshi, he became prefect of Wenzhou, arranged famine relief and waived the summer tax and autumn grain levy; after being transferred to Quanzhou, he was dismissed over a remonstrance.
His offices also included Chaoqing Dafu, Qingche Duwei, Shangqi Duwei, Shaoqing, Shangshu sheng Xingbu Shangshu, zhi mou zhou jun zhou shi, Zhongshu Sheren, Zhi Xueshiyuan, Zhi Sherenyuan, Ba zhang ge Xueshi, Ba zhang ge Zhi Xueshi, Ba zhang ge Daizhi, Quan Zhongshu Sheren, Quan Xingbu Shangshu, Yudie suo Jiantaoguan, Xiu Yudie guan, zhi mou fu jun fu shi, and Junqi jian Shaojian. His appointments as Ba zhang ge Zhi Xueshi and in Xuanzhou began in 1237; he remained in Xuanzhou until 1239. His appointments as Chaoqing Dafu, Ba zhang ge Daizhi, and in Hongzhou began in 1245; he remained in Hongzhou until 1247, and also served in Quanzhou and Ningguo fu.
Family and associations
His father was Wu Shen. His younger brothers were Wu Qisun (d. 1239) and Wu Changyi (b. 1183, d. 1240); his younger cousin Wu Youcheng died in 1239. He studied under Huang Gan.
He wrote prefaces for books by Chen Jue, Liu Zhang, Dai Min, and Shen Ping. He wrote epitaphs for Jiang Shuyu, Wang Liyan, Hui Chou, Zhou Duanchao, Wu Youcheng, Wu Changyi, and Bie Shi. He also wrote epitaphs for Duan Ding, Sheng (mother of Zhang Jian), Guo Rongzhi, Wu (wife of Xu Xuan), Guo Xi, Huang Hu, and Pan Weiyi.
He wrote postscripts for books by Li Ruoshui and Du Zheng, and a biography of Wu Jie. He also wrote a postscript on Li Ruoshui's book and painting, a temple stele inscription for Ding Fu, a record of a Buddhist temple for Shifan, and a tomb inscription for Bie Shi.
He composed an elegy and ci lyrics for Gao Side, received a letter from Liu Kezhuang, and received Hong Zigui's reply; he supplied verses and records and names for Zhang Kan's buildings, wrote a school (academy) record for Zhao Yuhuan, and made an unspecified request to Xu Qingsou.
